1. Legal keeping starts with the animal's origin
The pet hedgehog kept around the world is the African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris), also called the four-toed hedgehog. The animals suitable as companion animals come from captive-bred lines born and raised in managed breeding populations over many generations — not from the wild. A responsible purchase or adoption means a traceable individual with source records, sold by a breeder or rescue that can explain where the animal came from.
This is a different animal from native Chinese wild hedgehogs. Species such as the Amur hedgehog (Erinaceus amurensis) and related native hedgehogs are wild animals covered by the "Three Values" protection concept — terrestrial wildlife with important ecological, scientific and social value. Catching, trading, or privately keeping wild-caught individuals of these species is illegal. "It looks like a hedgehog" is not an identification: a cheap animal bought online or at a street market may be a protected wild animal.
Local policy across the Chinese mainland falls into three practical states, which you can check by province in our Legal Species Lookup:
- Commonly kept / no known local ban — captive-bred animals are widely kept and no specific provincial prohibition is publicly known, but local and property rules still apply.
- No clear rule / unclear — there is no published rule clearly addressing the species; "not prohibited" is not the same as "expressly permitted", so confirm before acquiring.
- Strict management — wildlife and urban animal management is enforced strictly here; obtain a clear, traceable (ideally written) answer first.
In every case, the definitive position is the written interpretation of your local forestry & grassland or agriculture-and-rural-affairs authority. Ask before you buy, keep a record of the answer, and never rely on a seller's verbal assurance.
2. Why releasing a pet hedgehog is never an option
Never release or abandon a pet hedgehog outdoors. Doing so creates three serious problems at once:
- Invasion risk to local ecosystems. A non-native animal with no local natural predators can multiply, prey on native invertebrates, snails, amphibians and ground-nesting eggs, and disturb the balance that local wildlife depends on.
- The animal will almost certainly die. Captive-bred hedgehogs lack wild foraging and danger-avoidance skills. In temperate and colder regions, a single cold night can trigger a hibernation attempt their bodies are not prepared for, which is often fatal; starvation, road traffic and predators kill most released animals within weeks.
- Legal liability. Releasing an alien species may violate wildlife-protection and biosecurity rules governing the abandonment and release of non-native animals. The person who releases the animal can bear administrative or even criminal liability, quite apart from the harm done.
"Setting it free" is not kindness — it is the most dangerous possible outcome for both the hedgehog and the local environment.
3. Our position: no wild-caught animals, no illegal trade
We reject wild-caught individuals and the illegal sale of wild-caught hedgehogs. Only acquire captive-bred, traceable animals, and keep proof of origin (purchase record, transfer record or breeder information). If a seller cannot explain the animal's source, refuses to provide records, or offers suspiciously cheap "wild hedgehogs", walk away.
This site never sells or brokers live animals and publishes no "buy a hedgehog" listings. Our job is education — including helping you recognize and avoid illegal wildlife trade.
4. The keeper's responsibility lasts a lifetime
- A commitment of 3–6 years. With proper care an African pygmy hedgehog commonly lives 3–6 years. Housing, heating, food and vet costs continue for its whole life, not just the first weeks.
- Never abandon. Moving, renting restrictions, allergies or lost interest are not reasons to release an animal. Plan before you acquire one.
- If you truly cannot keep it, rehome responsibly. Use trusted friends, qualified rescues, or established adoption channels, screen the new keeper, and hand over the enclosure, supplies and care notes. Never release.
- Seek veterinary care when sick. A cold belly, wobbling, limpness, refusal to eat or breathing difficulty is an emergency — contact an exotic-animal vet immediately; home treatment is not a substitute.
5. Rules change — ask the official channels
Wildlife and exotic-pet rules are updated from time to time, and local practice differs between cities. Trustworthy channels include:
- Your local forestry & grassland authority or agriculture-and-rural-affairs department, ideally with a written or otherwise traceable answer;
- The 12345 government service hotline (keep the ticket number);
- An exotic-animal veterinarian for care and health questions.

- 饲养较常见 / 未见本地专门禁令:人工繁育个体饲养较普遍,公开渠道未见省级专门禁止性规定,但本地规定与物业规则仍然适用;
- 口径不明确:没有公开发布的、明确针对该物种的规定;「没禁止」不等于「明确允许」,饲养前应先核实;
- 当地林业和草原主管部门或农业农村部门,尽量取得书面或其他可留痕的答复;
- 12345 政务服务便民热线(保存工单号);

- 現地の林業・草原主管部門または農業農村部門——できるだけ書面その他記録の残る回答を得る;
- 行政サービスホットライン12345(受付番号を控える);
